Premaritial Sex*

Nowhere in The Bible does it explicitly state, “Thou shall not have sex before marriage.” There are numerous verses that point towards that it is frowned upon. It is a part of human nature to want to push the limits and the sex is not exempt from that. Most people want some sort of rules or guidelines; maybe an outline or suggested way to live life to the fullest. For Christians’ this is The Bible. The Bible is some individuals’ handbook for life. For others it is merely a really old big book. Those are obviously not the only two ways to go about it they are just two examples.

Society as a whole may not agree about everything but there are those things of which there is a genuine consensus about. Take killing for example, yes a bit extreme but it makes for a decent example. I am going to go out on a bit of a limb and say that most people believe killing is bad, if you were to ask people why they thought this some would stare back at you like you are an idiot, some may say that it is just something known, and others may even tell you “because The Bible says so.” There may even be one or two people out there that could tell you that God revealed himself to Moses on Mt. Sinai and provided him with ten commandments to live by, one of them being “thou shall not kill”. Pretty clean cut stuff if you ask me. However, if you were to go out again and ask people for their personal opinion of premarital sex the answers would be much more diverse.

Those who give the answer “because it says so in The Bible” can usually give at least one or two verses in their defense (or at least I would like to think that they could.) Many pull their defense from First Corinthians chapter six: “The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body…Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh. But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

Just because someone believes that something is wrong does not me they do not do it. Those who believe that sex before marriage is wrong may still have sex before marriage. We are all sinners but God’s grace is not “get out of jail free” card. Some take the stance that as long as they do not have intercourse before marriage they are in the clear. We like to know where the boundaries and limits are and push things as far as they will go, without breaking and rules of course. Just because someone says premarital sex is bad does not mean that they are not sexually active. Also since The Bible does not specifically state that it is a sin people will interpret it as they please. People may have their own rules they try to stand by for this sort of thing. Kissing, fondling, French kissing, mutual masturbation, and anal sex are the sorts of things that some have convinced themselves is okay before marriage.
