Nowhere in The Bible does it explicitly state, “Thou shall not have sex before marriage.” There are numerous verses that point towards that it is frowned upon. It is a part of human nature to want to push the limits and the sex is not exempt from that. Most people want some sort of rules or guidelines; maybe an outline or suggested way to live life to the fullest. For Christians’ this is The Bible. The Bible is some individuals’ handbook for life. For others it is merely a really old big book. Those are obviously not the only two ways to go about it they are just two examples.
Society as a whole may not agree about everything but there are those things of which there is a genuine consensus about. Take killing for example, yes a bit extreme but it makes for a decent example. I am going to go out on a bit of a limb and say that most people believe killing is bad, if you were to ask people why they thought this some would stare back at you like you are an idiot, some may say that it is just something known, and others may even tell you “because The Bible says so.” There may even be one or two people out there that could tell you that God revealed himself to Moses on Mt. Sinai and provided him with ten commandments to live by, one of them being “thou shall not kill”. Pretty clean cut stuff if you ask me. However, if you were to go out again and ask people for their personal opinion of premarital sex the answers would be much more diverse.
Those who give the answer “because it says so in The Bible” can usually give at least one or two verses in their defense (or at least I would like to think that they could.) Many pull their defense from First Corinthians chapter six: “The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body…Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh. But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
Just because someone believes that something is wrong does not me they do not do it. Those who believe that sex before marriage is wrong may still have sex before marriage. We are all sinners but God’s grace is not “get out of jail free” card. Some take the stance that as long as they do not have intercourse before marriage they are in the clear. We like to know where the boundaries and limits are and push things as far as they will go, without breaking and rules of course. Just because someone says premarital sex is bad does not mean that they are not sexually active. Also since The Bible does not specifically state that it is a sin people will interpret it as they please. People may have their own rules they try to stand by for this sort of thing. Kissing, fondling, French kissing, mutual masturbation, and anal sex are the sorts of things that some have convinced themselves is okay before marriage.
but i read this poem and really like it. I used to not really like ee cummings but i read some of his poetry earlier this week and fell in love.
here’s one of my favorites:
next to of course god america i.
next to of course god america i
love you land of the pilgrims’ and so forth oh
say can you see by the dawn’s early my country
’tis of centuries come and go and are no more
what of it we should worry
in every language even deafanddumb
thy sons acclaim your glorious name by gorry
by jingo by gee by gosh by gum
why talk of beauty
what could be more beaut-
iful than these heroic happy dead
who rushed like lions to the roaring slaughter
they did not stop to think they died instead
then shall the voice of liberty be mute?”
“If you treat this discovery as something to fear, feel shame for, or mourn, people can (and some will) make sure to use those feelings against you. It’s just part of who you are…like having brown hair or pale skin or blue eyes…It should be treated as just a normal part of you, not a big part, just a part that makes up who you are…don’t let it define you…If you treat this responsibly, and maturely and calmly you will have a better chance of everyone doing the same. If you treat this with fear & tears, they will too. The more you build it up in your mind as a big deal, the worse it will get. Relax, YOU are who you are your stressing about something that you have no control over & is just a part of life”

- Peace n Blessin’s, Peace n Blessin’s
Love, what is it? Can you love someone who is dead? Everyone changes, but those who have passed on cannot change. How do you know that you would still “love” them? You love the idea of them. There is certain amount of water in the world. The same water that wiped out New Orleans is the same water that could bring a drought to an end for people in a dry spell and save them. Is there a certain amount of pain in the world and can there only be so much pain at one point in time present. We run into conflict and it gives us minor set backs on our journey or adventure to the top of the mountain. Donald Miller says to embrace conflict because you can only understand pleasure through conflict. So struggling is not always a bad thing. It might not be fun but if you fight through it something good can come out of it. Donald Miller’s new book is titled A Million Miles in a Thousand Years and in it he talks about his personal to talk about his experiences with God. Donald Miller took a unique approach to his speaking that really resonated with me. He talked about life as if it was a book or a movie, in that every good book or movie needs conflict to make it interesting and that conflict leads to a climatic scene with in turn leads to resolution. If there is no conflict present the writer with create conflict just to “get things rolling”. He says we are all in search of a Summit; we all crave to be at the top of the mountain. We run into conflict and it gives us minor set backs on our journey or adventure to the top of the mountain. Donald says to embrace conflict because you can only understand pleasure through conflict. So struggling is not always a bad thing. It might not be fun but if you fight through it something good can come out of it. Miller talked about conflict in life and how without the conflict or struggle life would be, well not life. It is through conflict that certain things immerge. Another question addressed was, are we suppose to experience negative emotions in life or are we doing something wrong? Some people believe that negative emotions are bad and that God should not make us suffer through them. Donald went onto explain that just because we experience conflict we are not being punished. In Genesis, God sees that Adam is lonely so he creates Eve. God pushes Adam and creates a sense on conflict with in him. God tell Adam to name all of the animals, not an easy task. Donald also talked about how theology is becoming a sales pitch or advertisement rather than a way of living and thinking. Miller worked for an advertising agency at one point in his life and explains to use what seemed to be the simplest advertising strategy ever. First, convince your target audience that they are unhappy or incomplete and second, convince them that your produce with fill the hole they have and make them happy. It is so simple yet so true. Some people go on the belief that “only Jesus will fill you” or “you will only be happy with Jesus”, this is the same concept. These statements may be true but there is definitely more to life than that. All of life’s conflict leads to the climactic scene, “We long for a resolution to the tension that exists”, says Donald. Many Christians go by the belief that the climactic scene in their life in when they met Jesus or the acknowledgment that Jesus died for our sins and came back. These may be true but Donald pushed us to see that the climatic scene in our lives, what we live for is that when we are in heaven with God and he sees his son within us. Miller says, “Only through conflict can you value what is attained.” In the coffee house session in the Hunter Welcome Center Miller read a chapter from his book that was still dealing with this idea of conflict in life. In the chapter he read he talks about how he was at a seminar by Robert McKee and McKee says something that really hit close to me and make me rethink past struggles. McKee says in his seminar:
You have to take your character to the place where they just can’t take it anymore. You’ve been there, haven’t you? You’ve been out on the ledge. The marriage is over now, the dream is over now, nothing good can come from this. Writing a story isn’t about making your peaceful fantasies come true. The whole point of the story is the character arc. You didn’t think joy could change a person, did you? Joy is what you feel when the conflict is over. But it’s conflict that changes a person. You put your characters through hell. You put them through hell. That’s the only way we change.
This whole perspective that conflict is good is going to make me rethink the way I deal with struggles. Not that they are away of God testing me or punishing me but that when I come out of it I will be a stronger person for doing so. It’s basically the whole idea of that whichdoes not kills you makes you stronger.”
This song is so AH-MAZE-ING and the band as a whole is so unique and powerful in thier own ways. Envy on the Coast is an alternativerockband from Long Island, New York. Envy On The Coast is made up of the ashes of three former Long Island bands, the pop punk tinged 3 Minute Warning and Kingston 12, and the post-hardcore band Guilt Like Gravity (formerly known as The Prizefighter, a band featuring the original singer of Taking Back Sunday). The band was formerly known as “Writ in Water” and “New Atlantic” and had a different drummer named Alex Schatz who left the band for college. Dan Gluszak (formerly of Guilt like Gravity) then joined. Envy on the Coast is currently working on their sophomore album, but they will be supporting on Taking Back Sunday‘s holiday tour in December as well as headlining four holiday shows of their own in the New York area. The band will be doing a full North American tour this spring with Taking Back Sunday and Anberlin.
I have recently fallen in love with Fall of Troy, especially these two songs:
